Synopsis:

The Smallest Spark Can Grow into a Fire

When Prince Joseph broke off his engagement to Brigitte, her life was shattered—but meeting Yuri helped her start putting it together again. The two may have started off as rivals, yet the more she learns about him, the more she’s come to appreciate him…Unfortunately, Joseph is ready to turn everything upside down again, suddenly attempting to reinstate their engagement. Brigitte is far from eager to go back, but her relationship with Yuri is getting complicated. Not only that, but it seems her weak, no-name spirit might be something else entirely…! (Source: Yen Press)

A Villainess’ Spirit Awakens!

After picking herself back up from a broken engagement, the second instalment of If the Villainess and Villain Met follows Brigitte as her whole world is about to change.

It Peeped!

Unwilling to address the cliffhanger left over from volume one, the series’ sequel begins with new developments regarding Brigitte’s spirit. Above all other aspects of the story, segments surrounding spirits inject the most of Brigitte’s personality within them, hence why it continues to be the story’s strongest aspect in this volume.

Developments appear thick and fast as Brigitte’s magical powers transform, eventually inviting a spirit. As a result, the novel’s first half finds the series’ protagonist searching for personal growth as Brigitte is forced to confront her past and future.

The future offers a lighter side to her development. It is signified by her blossoming romance with Yuri, which has no shortage of cute moments. Confronting her past takes a more serious approach. These scenes find Brigitte forced to overcome her traumas, which remain raw and vivid. Her memories describing when her hand is put in the flame are especially poignant.

As for the spirit awakening itself, it adds some entertaining moments of comedy to the series. Brigitte’s spirit takes the form of a small chick that likes to peep away and cause all sorts of chaos.

Prince (Not so) Charming

The Prince Joseph question is eventually answered in the latter half of the volume. Determined to get Brigitte back, this plot line follows a similar path to others in its genre, as Joseph’s motives turn out to be less than pure. Joseph is obsessed with Brigitte due to his perceived notion that she’s the only person who’s more of a failure than he is.

For as cutesy as this series portrays itself, this segment turns out to be a rather unpleasant read. Prince Joseph’s cruel and vindictive behaviour feels out of place in a series as light-hearted as this one. It does, however, provide the series with some necessary developments for the future. Firstly, the romance between Yuri and Brigitte is solidified, and secondly, the event serves as the final key to unlocking Brigitte’s true spirit power.

Overall, If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love’s second volume builds on the solid foundations laid in its opening act.

In addition to further exploring the world’s spirit magic system, the second volume finally gives the boot to Prince Joseph, allowing for the romance between Brigitte and Yuri to take centre stage.

Synopsis:

Ever since the misanthropic Dark Overlord Allen rescued runaway Charlotte, his secluded mansion has grown more and more lively. One day, he is shocked to discover by chance that it’s Charlotte’s birthday tomorrow. Everyone else brings her gifts, but he hasn’t prepared anything to celebrate! With his dignity as a boyfriend on the line, he racks his brains for the best present ever—but something strange befalls Charlotte… What secrets lie hidden in her past and identity? Will the lovebirds finally muster up the courage to share their first kiss? What awaits them on their family trip to Ryugukyo, the mysterious snowy resort? Things come to a head with the schemers behind Charlotte’s plight in this adventurous climax! (Source: J-Novel Club)

A Naughty Final Confrontation!

After reuniting with her sister, the climactic volume in the Crash Course in Naughtiness series sees Allen and Charlotte enact their naughtiest pleasure yet – revenge!

In the latest chapter of this sweet rom-com, the action begins as the date nears Charlotte’s birthday. A supposedly momentous occasion, it’s an event that has Allen all up in trepidation. To kiss or not to kiss? And that’s not all that waiting for the blossoming couple. A surprise visitor from the past and an unfortunate meeting in the present will test this cute couple to their absolute limits.

A Birthday to Remember

As Allen and Charlotte’s relationship begins to blossom, an Evans family affair proves to be a final stumbling block to their happily ever after. All starting on Charlotte’s birthday, Allen’s wholesome anxieties about the right time to take the next step is interrupted by his significant others reincarnation syndrome.

With the first saint, Lydillia, stuck in Charlotte’s body, it quickly becomes apparent that Charlotte isn’t the first to get the short end of the stick in the Evans family. A tragic tale of duty and disease reveals that the saint may not be as ready to move on as she makes out.

Struggling to come to a solution, Allen’s magic turns out to be the key. Able to separate the two, the series goes into cuteness overload as Allen and Charlotte welcome Lydia into their ever-growing family as their adoptive daughter.

This isn’t the only family drama for Charlotte to deal with in the volume. Acting as the grande finale, the series finally tackles the confrontation between Charlotte, her parents and her fiancé.

Taking the form of a naughty revenge plot, the climax of Charlotte’s arc is handled adeptly by the author. It takes in Charlotte’s personality, her development over the three volumes, and the style of the series to provide a conclusion that gives the antagonists their just desserts, as well as not going too far to where it feels off-putting.

Overall, A Crash Course in Naughtiness provides everything and more as it ties up loose ends and prepares for a happy ending. For the third volume, the story goes into cuteness overdrive as it builds on creating the perfect family for Allen and Charlotte. Moreover, the story provides a satisfying conclusion to the betrayal arc that’s been ongoing since the series’ inception.

The Oblivious Saint Can’t Contain Her Power: Forget My Sister! Turns Out I Was the Real Saint All Along! Vol. 1 Review

Cover Illustration for Volume 1

Synopsis:

Lady Carolina, the overlooked daughter of a powerful duke, has always believed herself to be the black sheep amid her illustrious kin. Her father is the distinguished prime minister; her elder sister, a prodigious mage destined to become their nation’s next Saint. In comparison, Carolina resigns herself to a quiet existence in their shadows until a sudden and unexpected royal decree alters her destiny, thrusting her into a political marriage with the formidable “Bloodthirsty Prince” of the neighboring Empire of Malcosias. Determined to prove her worth, Carolina takes a bold step into a world fraught with both political and mortal peril. As royal obligations intertwine with hints of true love and the stirrings of her own latent power, Carolina moves ever closer to understanding what it truly means to be exceptional. (Source: J-Novel Club)

A Powerless Daughter’s Journey to the Empire!

Written by Almond and illustrated by Yoshiro Ambe, The Oblivious Saint Can’t Contain Her Power is the latest license to grace the J-Novel Heart line of novels.

Following the story of Carolina, the premier volume in the series finds the protagonist at a point of great change in her life. Sick to death of her sister’s constant abuse, her chance to escape comes in the form of a royal decree commanding her to take part in a political marriage. Ushered away to the Empire of Malcosias, her new life as the bride of the “bloodthirsty prince” will bring a whole set of new challenges for the meek duke’s daughter. From political upheaval to assassination attempts, life for Carolina will never be quite the same again, and that’s before she discovers she might not be so magicless.

The Saint Misunderstands

The Oblivious Saint’s story takes a similar form to the often-used “suffer then rewarded” trope. Faced with acts of abuse or indifference from her family, Carolina’s reward in this situation is her chance at escape through political marriage.

In all fairness, Oblivious Saint is a well-written example of the trope. To avoid a generic take on the genre, the author does a good job adding layers to the overall simplistic narrative and successfully pulls off several attempts at subversion. Carolina’s father makes for a good example of the latter.

During the novel’s first act, Carolina misunderstands her father’s actions. What she sees as indifference is quickly turned around to show remorse. Her father loves her but finds it difficult to express given the situation he’s put her in. It’s a rare act in light novel series that adds to the overall humanity of the characters.

Carolina and the Power Struggle

As for Carolina’s reward section, the author wastes no time in showing that Carolina’s happy ending will not be so easily won. As she journeys alongside her new fiancé, Edward, several mysteries appear surrounding the Empire. Power struggles, assassinations, a loss in magical strength, and the true identity behind Carolina’s powers all crop up.

Unfortunately, it is with these mysteries that my major problem with the volume appears. Given the interesting plot threads set up, I can’t help but feel that the author chose the wrong one to start with.

The plot of a power struggle between brothers lacks impact. Aside from being able to see the development from a mile away, the plot can’t get to full throttle due to the lack of players introduced and the fact that Carolina can only play the victim, given that her powers haven’t awoken.

Overall, The Oblivious Saint’s first volume sets some good foundations for its continuation. Subverting genre expectations and setting up interesting plot threads for the future holds promise for the series. Unfortunately, what sours the volume a little is the power struggle plot. Poorly placed and lacking the right impact, I can only hope the next plotline is better realised.

Cover Illustration for Volume 1

Synopsis:

Sometimes Fire and Ice are Perfect for Each Other.

Brigitte Meidell belongs to a noble family, which means high expectations were placed upon her spirit contract. However, her bonded spirit turned out to be a weak no-name, and ever since, she has been a source of shame to her family. She thought her engagement to the prince would turn her life around, but when he publicly breaks off their relationship, she finds herself alone again. After her haughty, villainous behavior as the prince’s brideto- be, no one shows her much sympathy—except for the duke’s son Yuri, who attends the same magic academy. Yuri is feared for his incredible abilities and icy personality, but with him on her side, her fortunes might have changed… (Source: Yen Press)

A Romance of Ice and Fire!

Opposites Attract

From romcoms to fantasy romance series, the next light novel on my roster asks whether a misunderstood villainess and villain can fall in love.

Heading back to the roots of the villainess genre, Met and Fell in Love starts with the protagonist, Brigitte, facing down a classic broken engagement scene. Accused and cast out by the usual suspects, Brigitte’s fancy-free new life leads her into the arms of Yuri. Cold and distant, he’s the only man in the academy more hated than this series’ titular villainess.

The romantic aspect of this novel gets off to a rocky start. As expected, given Yuri’s default nature, there’s very little love loss between them as his overly harsh, straight-talking nature constantly rubs Brigitte the wrong way. As their relationship begins to blossom, however, a sweet coupling between them starts to take place. Their cutest moments come through their competitions against each other and the awkward stumbling as seen through the perspectives of their attendants.

Spirits of a Fickle Nature

For the plot’s main meat and bones, the story takes a highly intriguing look at the magic system within the world, spirits. The summoning of strong spirits is highly valued in this world, especially for nobles, and it’s another reason why Brigitte is isolated at the start of the novel.

Despite having contracted with a seemingly weak spirit, one of Brigitte’s few passions in the series is her love for spirits and their study. Throughout her investigations, we’re given an in-depth look at how these beings operate as part of this fantasy world. They are given a great amount of agency and, in many ways, aren’t too dissimilar to humans. Strong spirits are all said to be able to talk, love and feel.

This agency makes up the backbone of the story’s mystery. As it turns out, Brigitte’s spirit contract may not be as weak as first thought. After revealing itself to save Brigitte and her classmates, it is implied that there’s more to a bond between humans and spirits. Physically and emotionally linked, perhaps one of the main reasons Brigitte’s Spirit is considered “lazy” comes from her fear of fire. A trauma that she goes someway into combating by the end of this volume.

Met and Fell in Love’s first volume is a tale of two halves. Whilst its romantic aspects are predictable yet solidly written, the series’ in-depth look at magical world-building is something to write home about.

The prospect of further investigation into the world of spirits and the hidden potential of Brigitte’s spirit are all reasons why I’ll be continuing this series into its sequel.

Cover Illustration for Volume 2

Synopsis:

The wizard Allen’s naughty lessons take a new turn when he begins to realize his true feelings for Charlotte—feelings that he knows he should keep locked away but threaten to burst out any minute. With a zany elf novelist, a rebellious young Fenrir, and a formidable Infernal Capybara jumping into the scene, will Allen finally succeed in confessing his love to Charlotte? Can he save her from her mysterious pursuers? Meanwhile, they journey to the Athena School of Magic and Allen’s family home when they hear the news that Charlotte’s sister Natalia has enrolled as a student, but there’s trouble brewing… Magic explodes and emotions overflow in this wholesome hurly-burly romcom! (Source: J-Novel Club)

The Naughtiness of Love and Family!

The Indulgences of Love

Ever since she arrived at Allen’s doorstep, Charlotte has seen her once-sheltered world completely turned around. Through the Dark Overlord’s specialist guidance, Charlotte has grown from strength to strength with a little help from a series of naughty indulgences.

Continuing to show Charlotte the hedonistic side of life, Crash Course’s sequel starts with both her and Allen discovering the naughtiest indulgence of them all…love!

Personal growth has always played a major role in the story, and the second instalment continues to well-actualise the deuteragonist’s development. Given the problems both characters have faced with others in the past, the realisation of their mutual feelings for each other comes on rapidly (perhaps even slightly too rapidly).

What follows is half the novel dedicated to the heartwarming and cute moments the two of them share as they stumble through the plot holes of early romance. From discovering the infinite naughty pleasures that can be had by doing them together to surviving several life-threatening incidents, they quickly prove that their relationship is as solid as a rock.

An Academy Face-to-Face

With their confidence at an all-time high and their relationship set on solid foundations, the story’s second half deals the newly-christened couple, a challenge that’ll test them on their past insecurities.

News has travelled that Charlotte’s little sister, Natalia, has come into trouble at Allen’s former academy. Subverting everyone’s expectations, however, it seems that Natalia is the trouble rather than being in it. Leader of a gang for justice, she’s become the head of the school, squashing any potential troublemakers on her rise to the top.

Besides a few comedic moments, including Allen’s parents and his cringy past, this latter section of the novel hits all the right emotional beats. Seeing her sister again leaves Charlotte understandably conflicted. Swirling with anxiety over the potential scenarios that could follow, Allen offers Charlotte a lifeline – disguise herself and see the type of woman her little sister has become.

Despite the cagey start between them, it becomes clear to Charlotte that Natalia is still kind at heart, resulting in an emotional reunion.

As the sun sets on A Crash Course’s sequel, it brings with it several new developments, both plot and character-wise, to keep the series fresh.

Whilst the series’ heartwarming and humorous moments are great, the sequel’s best moments can be found as it hits new emotional beats. A particular highlight comes as Charlotte is forced to face her past demons in the form of her little sister. The anxiety and apprehension that coincide with an eventual happy reunion hit all the right notes.

When he hears the sad story of Charlotte’s pitiful life, he discovers a new calling—giving her a crash course in all things naughty, from late-night feasts of cake and ramen to sleeping in till the afternoon, from dressing up in cute outfits to fun-filled days at the beach! Allen is determined to pamper Charlotte with every irresistible pleasure imaginable. Will he succeed in healing her emotional trauma and building up her confidence? And is there anything special between this odd couple? Here begins the tale of a wicked sorcerer who leads an innocent girl astray…down the path of pure self-indulgence! (Source: J-Novel Club)

A Noble Lady’s Journey Towards Self-Indulgence!

All the World’s Naughty Desires

Fleeing abuse and betrayal, A Crash Course in Naughtiness’ beginning finds Charlotte using her last ounce of strength to search for a safe haven. What she finds is the home of an eccentric wizard named Allen. A truly fateful meeting, the arrival of the two in each other’s lives leads to a journey filled with personal growth and an expansion of horizons.

Despite the story’s rather rough start and Allen’s initially forceful methods, this quickly changes when the two end up doing “naughty” activities and adventures together, filling the series with a cute and heartwarming atmosphere.

From eating sweets for breakfast, staying up past bedtime, and going on an expensive hot springs retreat – these normal self-indulgences help to take Charlotte out of her shell and slowly blossom into a confident young woman.

Taming and Independence

As the story progresses, both main characters grow in leaps and bounds as the two being in each other’s presence can only be seen as a good thing.

For Charlotte, her ever-growing confidence results in a healthy dose of willfulness and independence. From her meek personality developed after years of abuse and trauma, by the end of the first volume, Charlotte can make her own decisions and travel on journeys by herself, much to Allen’s anxiety.

Furthermore, Charlotte’s growth and independence are helped massively by the introduction of her skill. As in many fantasy settings, this world also makes good use of magic and skills. In Charlotte’s case, she ends up with a beast tamers abilities. A fitting ability for this cute series as fluffy creatures are always coming up to her looking to be pet.

For Allen, Charlotte’s presence at his home helps reintroduce him to wider society. Having dealt with betrayal in the past himself, meeting Charlotte shows him there’s still good in humanity.

With the two protagonists helping each other through vast trauma, it’s no wonder that by the end of the volume, romantic feelings start to come into play.

Overall, A Crash Course in Naughtiness’ first volume deftly handles its cute and heartwarming atmosphere alongside its more serious moments of trauma and a journey of self-discovery.

While the cute moments are great, the story truly begins to shine as it follows Charlotte on a journey of personal growth. As a young woman mired by a past filled with abuse and nothing but indifference, her journey alongside Allen sees her blossom into a capable and confident woman ready to face any adversary the world could throw at her.

The Invisible Wallflower Marries an Upstart Aristocrat After Getting Dumped for Her Sister! Vol. 1 Review

Tags: Fantasy, Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life, Shoujo, Villainess

Sub-Tags: Business, Personal Growth, Tsundere

Cover Illustration for Volume 1

Synopsis:

Can An Ordinary Aristocrat And A Nouveau Riche Tsundere Find Love In An Unconsummated Marriage?!

Iris, the daughter of a marquess, not only had her fiancé stolen by her younger sister, but she also ended up having to marry Lord Lucas, a nouveau riche merchant who was shouldering her family’s debts. However, this former-commoner-turned-baron’s reason for marrying her was just to have Iris teach him and his servants how to survive in high society!

“I was told that I lack presence and that I’m like air. If someone as plain and dull as myself could be of any use to you, I will be more than happy to help, Lord Lucas,” Iris said with complete seriousness, throwing Lucas off guard. Will Lucas be able to resist being slowly drawn to the dedicated Iris, who strives to support him and the people in her life? A complicated romcom that starts with a marriage blanc begins here! (Source: Cross Infinite World)

The Disgraced Old Blood Meets the Nouveau Riche!

To Find the Best in Oneself

Her fiancé stolen and forced to fulfil a political marriage for the sake of her family’s debt; The Invisible Wallflower’s opening volume follows Iris at a rather tumultuous time.

Typical of this genre, the protagonist is viewed as plain and unappealing and has internalised this as a lack of self-confidence. However, it is clear from the outset of this series that what Iris may lack in confidence, she more than makes up in determination. Despite travelling to unfamiliar territory with a man surrounded by unsavoury rumours, she’s more than willing to make a success of the situation not only for her family but also for her own sake.

Rather than a typical marriage, her new husband, Lord Lucas, wishes for her to act more like a governess overseeing their progress to becoming perfect members of the upper class. Through determination and armed with knowledge from the capital, Iris can grow closer to all members of the Stock household.

The results of Iris’s efforts are best illustrated by the author in two ways. The first is through Iris’s maid Kiki, and the gardener. Constant conversations and allowing for a safe environment enable the two with noble traumas to finally open up.

The second is the effect Iris has on the Stock business. With everyone able to address nobles formally, the same nobles are unable to low-ball stock, which means a rise in profits and wages for everyone.

The Rocky Starts of Romance

By getting closer to members of the Stock household, it allows the main focus of the story to move forward also. This series is primarily focused on romance, and the overall impression of the relationship between the two is awkward yet cute.

Iris’ dogged effort to teach formal mannerisms doesn’t fail to get the attention of her political husband, Lucas. Slowly but surely, Iris’ efforts work on him as well, turning their once unconsummated marriage into a situation where sparks have begun to fly.

That isn’t to say that their loving relationship by the end of the volume hasn’t faced hardships. With the two lovebirds noticeably getting closer as the story progresses, both childhood friend Coldola and favourite servant Leikzig start to have issues.

Both issues stem from fierce loyalty, worried that Iris won’t be strong enough to help Lucas when times inevitably turn tough. Iris solves these problems by showing them that she’s more than just princessly noble.

Overall, The Invisible Wallflower’s first volume starts the series off strong. With a sharp focus on personal growth, the series succeeds in showing how new influences can lead to positive change.

For Lucas and the members of his household, Iris’ influence sees many open up about past traumas and signals a way to move forward positively. For Iris, moving to unfamiliar territory finds her trying new things and becoming more independent away from the influence of her oppressive family.

As the series moves forward to confront trauma’s of the past, there’s lots still to look forward to.

Reincarnated as the Piggy Duke Series Review

Cover Illustration for Volume 4

Synopsis:

In the popular anime Shuya Marionette, there is a character whom everyone looks upon with scorn: the so-called “Piggy Duke,” third son of Duke Denning and a student of Kirsch Mage Institute. This can only spell doom for the current Slowe Denning, who knows he’s been reincarnated into the world of that anime as said villain! There is a ray of hope, however. If he uses his in-depth knowledge of the anime and his unparalleled power as a master of all the elements, surely Slowe can gain popularity with his peers and change his fate! Perhaps this time, he can make the one small wish that never came to fruition in the anime come true: to become a man worthy of Charlotte, his retainer, and to confess his love to her! (Source: J-Novel Club)

Slowe’ll Do Anything for Love!

Now that the series Reincarnated as the Piggy Duke has finished, it’s time for my first-ever series review. Looking back at the highs and lows and discussing whether it’s worth picking up!

To Change the Future (Volumes 1-5)

Fans of action, romance and second chances should pay particular attention to this series. Setting itself within an anime, Slowe’s goals for the first five volumes of the series are simple – change the tragic events that’ll unfold in the anime, and confess his feelings to Charlotte.

Seeing the error of his ways, Slowe is determined to shed his black-hearted image. In an attempt to earn both redemption and respect from all of those he’s disappointed, he’ll use knowledge of future events to birth himself anew. Striving for a different future requires more than just information; it also calls for strength of character, which Slowe has in spades.

In the early days of the series, determination, courage, and strength all make up the backbone of Slowe’s character. Whether it’s fighting off deadly assassins, dragons or immortal Liches, there’s nothing Slowe wouldn’t do to stop the tragic war from unfolding and earn the affection of his childhood sweetheart, Charlotte. It’s refreshing to see a character from a light novel fantasy series so determined and willing to grab what they want for a change.

Joining Slowe on his journey are several engaging side characters, all needing to overcome significant problems. The obvious first candidate is Charlotte, Slowe’s beau and secret princess of Huzark. Watching her kingdom being destroyed by monsters has shaped her central trauma. If she’s to remain a Denning retainer, she’ll have to face her fears and become a lot stronger to continue being by Slowe’s side throughout his ever-growing dangerous adventures.

Alicia and Shuya, the main characters from the original anime, also join in on the hijinks. Alicia’s history is highly intertwined with Slowe, given that she’s his former fiancée. At the start of the series, her feelings about Slowe are still conflicted, and she’s struggling to find a place to go next to move on.

Meanwhile, Shuya is the original protagonist of the anime. Portrayed as the typical heroic type, his actions in the anime help save many lives and stop the war with Dustour. These events, through Slowe’s eyes, however, see a protagonist struggling to come to grips with his power. Moreover, Shuya’s hero complex is causing problems – putting his safety at risk and giving him tunnel vision on what’s really important.

Looking at the series, the blueprints of the anime not only help integrate the characters but help the story too. Having plot events coalesce into Shuya’s spirit awakening means that the story is tight and moves at a well-thought-out pace.

The Successor (Volumes 6-10)

Unfortunately, the blueprints of the anime no longer apply to the second half of the series. Without the events of the anime, the series’ latter half runs into its biggest problem, a lack of consistent direction. Moreover, this issue is compounded in the sixth and seventh volumes by the strange direction taken with Slowe’s character.

With his anime knowledge in absentia and antagonists becoming ever-stronger, Slowe loses all confidence. In the face of the spirit of darkness and her strongest fighter, Slowe is but a shadow of his former self. He struggles with what choices to make in the presence of immeasurable strength and precarious diplomacy. Yet, it’s Slowe’s confidence and determination in his decision-making that is one of the main draws of the series. Thankfully, this is only a temporary change, and things get back on track by the end of the seventh volume.

In truth, the latter half of the series isn’t all bad. This arc sees Slowe finally achieve one of his main goals, confessing to Charlotte. This is, hands down, the best moment of the series. It is done perfectly within the series’ style – both poignant and timely.

Furthermore, the final volumes develop and finish major character arcs. Slowe and Charlotte get the best treatment. Slowe finally deals with the issues surrounding his father. Whilst they’ll never be close, the closure he gets through his father’s acceptance of his decision and his love for Charlotte is enough for him to move on.

Through the latter arc, Alicia also learns to move on. Her complex feelings for Slowe were always going to make it difficult to move on, however, the dissolution of her engagement to Slowe in such a ceremonial fashion has gone some way into dealing with her feelings.

Charlotte’s character arc concludes by the end of the series as well. As mentioned earlier in the review, Charlotte’s trauma has shaped her adolescence. From being completely afraid of monsters to becoming an active participant in a battle for the soul of the nation. Charlotte has more than earned her place by Slowe’s side in more than just a romantic way.

Unfinished Business

Regardless of the latter half’s lack of direction and eventual cancellation, the series remains a fun ride and manages to get closure on the main point of the series, confessing to Charlotte. The main characters are all well-developed and, by the end of the series, have all managed to work on their issues, becoming more complex characters as a result. Readers will not be disappointed having read the series and seeing the result.

There are, however, several minor issues that crop up due to the series’ cancellation. Firstly, several of the character arcs come over as unfinished. Shuya is a particular victim. After the events of volume five and the encasing of the fire spirit, there’s very little attention paid to his character afterwards. Only the eighth volume gives him anything to do, and it barely goes far enough to showcase the beginnings of his life of heroism.

To a lesser extent, Slowe and Charlotte’s romantic endeavours are also hampered by a lack of time and writing space. Personally, I would’ve preferred a little more time spent with the two as a couple doing couple-like things. Reading about the two’s first date or development of affections would’ve been a nice welcome break from the action-heavy volumes.

Reincarnated as the Piggy Duke Vol. 10 Review

Cover Illustration for Volume 10

Synopsis:

Slowe thought he left House Denning behind him when he chose to become the blackhearted Piggy Duke. He walked away from his family, his knights, his reputation—all for the sake of the girl he loved. Even so, those days feel like a distant memory as, driven by his feelings for Charlotte, Slowe has proven his merit time and again. Everyone regards him highly now, so at last, he can bury the Piggy Duke persona for good… That is, until his past comes back to haunt him. The arrival of his sister and a new potential retainer is only the beginning. He’s also reunited with his father, Balderoy Denning, who drags Slowe into a new battle he can’t afford to lose—a battle that may win him true freedom should he emerge victorious. Freedom from the expectations of House Denning. Freedom to be with whoever he wants. Whether this is a blessing or a burden isn’t yet clear, but Slowe’s sure of one thing… He’s willing to wager everything he has for a place by Charlotte’s side, just like he once did many years ago. Slowe, His Father and the Decisive Battle!

The Denning Patriarch

As the curtain closes on Piggy Duke’s story, the final volume is singularly focused on the Denning family and their business dealings.

It’s been a long time coming, but the story finally decides to deal with the elephant in the room – Slowe and the relationship with his father. Diplomatically described as tumultuous, Slowe’s father is one of the main reasons he ran away from his responsibilities. Although having finally met the patriarch, it’s clear that Slowe’s been an unreliable narrator.

Though he hides it well, there’s a depth of fatherly love that Slowe’s yet to realise. Through his final test, Slowe’s father offers him his desired freedom; an opportunity to live a life with Charlotte and avoid becoming the head of the Denning household. It’s just a shame we get this information from his father’s new retainer, Mint, rather than have a scene between father and son for this information.

A Battle Against Rust

Piggy Duke‘s final volume is very much action-packed. The main plot point of this volume is destroying Rust, a secret military organisation hired by the Dennings. Making Kirsch Academy their battleground, Slowe’s freedom rests in the death of the organisation’s head, Magna.

The battles between the organisations are fierce, appropriate for a final volume. Kirsch is completely levelled during the attacks, and several characters make important steps in their development. For one, Slowe can wield the Ring of Authority by the end of the story. An important magical item, it’s a must for anyone wanting to become the head of the Denning household.

Charlotte also sees a metamorphosis in her character. A major theme throughout the series involves whether Charlotte has what it takes to become a Denning retainer. A retainer for the Dennings needs mental and physical strength to survive the harsh lives they usually end up living. This is one of the few character arcs that plan out. From being scared of monsters to actively participating and helping to defeat Rust, the tenth volume finally shows to others that Charlotte has what it takes to join Slowe on all his dangerous adventures.

Rust is eventually defeated, granting Slowe and Charlotte their freedom, although it’s not the one they were probably expecting.

Overall, Piggy Duke’s final volume ends the story on a satisfactory note – the best you could expect of a series cut short. It manages to finish several character arcs, meaning that main characters Slowe and Charlotte end on a high note. However, others are left by the wayside, unfinished business that I’ll talk more at length about in the upcoming Piggy Duke series review, where I believe the conversation will be more appropriate.

The Blossoming of New Love!

Love and Growth

Following the confession between Amane and Mahiru, The Angel Next Door’s fifth volume captures the awkward first steps in their new relationship.

What stands out most about this volume is the remarkable character growth that has occurred for both main characters over the past five volumes.

For Amane, this change is the most striking. In this volume, there are markedly fewer moments where he puts himself down and shies away from complicated situations. The blooming romance has Amane often look more towards the future rather than continue dwelling in the past. Rather than ruminating that he isn’t good enough, he’s excited to improve and move forward in the relationship with Mahiru.

These positive changes are also noticed by their classmates. Upon revealing their new status and unabashedly flirting, they’ve become more accessible and open towards their peers. This allows them to broaden their horizons in terms of friend group, and both of them are seen making new connections in the volume.

A Change for All

Amane’s change and increase in confidence is an evident theme running throughout the volume and helps to provide a sense of closure to his old life by the end of the volume.

Visiting his parents and admitting to their relationship makes up the final part of the story. Whilst they needn’t have been so worried about their reaction, neither were prepared to face Amane’s old trauma while out on a walk together.

Thanks to everything the two have been through together, Amane is able to let go of his past and move on. Even going so far as to thank his old friend for showing his true face making it easier to build himself up again.

This scene is a testament to the positive impact both of them have had on each other. The two give each other small pushes in the right direction to improve themselves.

A Touch of Awkwardness

This series has always been known to take the sugar up to 1000, but this volume takes this new a whole new dimension.

Finally becoming an item has opened the floodgates, so to speak. This volume is filled with cute and sugary sweet moments, none more so as the two awkwardly dance around the touching and kissing situation. Finding the perfect moment for this special step is a challenge for them both, but it benefits the reader – lots of flirting moments to enjoy!

Moving to the relationship stage of the series has opened many doors of development for The Angel Next Door. Alongside heaps of cute, fluffy moments, the latest volume has put a lot of character growth front and centre, providing some nice depth to the long-running rom-com series.
