A Trip to Japan and Back!

Lighthearted, entertaining, and now without sticky boar incidents! After-School Dungeon Diver’s sequel improves upon an already fun series opener.

Having been introduced to the oddball adventurer, Akira, and the fantasy world of Do-Melta in the previous volume, the second story in the series starts with a swap as Scrael visits Japan. Coming with the usual scenes of awe and amazement, what makes this a stand-out start for the series is how the author manages to tailor the trip to another world to Scrael’s tastes. In keeping with her character, Akira’s tour skips the usual sights in favour of a food extravaganza interspersed with the odd fistfight. It makes for a fun-filled adventure, and with Scrael’s inner foodie unlocked, I’m sure it won’t be long before the two of them make a return visit.

With the trip to Japan over before they know it, the second volume’s story continues back in Do-Melta with more of the series’ namesake: Dungeon Diving. This series’ strongest attribute bar none, the author switches up the formula by placing Akira as part of a diving team.

If there was anybody still left who thought that Akira wasn’t different from the rest of the adventurers, then this plot hammers it home. Comparing him to an up-and-coming adventuring group, the segment showcases just how unique his abilities and thinking are within the fantasy world.

Akira is strategic. Unlike those who enter the dungeons for fame and glory, he uses his time wisely to search out the best hunting spots and the best methods for hunting to maximise his rewards. Furthermore, his unique style of magic and hunting tools means he’s often able to kill even the toughest of bosses. It’s no wonder why, out of all the other diving groups, Marcels has been trying so hard to get him on their side.

Overall, After-School Dungeon Diver’s second instalment manages to improve on the foundations provided in Volume 1. The volume owes its improvement to the author’s decision to move away from the more problematic lewd aspects of the series. Instead, the story uses this time to develop the mechanics of dungeon diving as well as Akira’s uniqueness in the fantasy world. With a sensei-heavy volume promised for next time, here’s to hoping that the secrets she keeps help with the series’ longevity.
